rest to artists, ethnographers and numismatists.
The Dish
The poker-work and the painting on wood
were performed by Aleksandr Khlebnikov. The
dish depicts a seaman of the Battleship Potemkin.
There is the following inscription under his por-
trait and alongside of the dish: “Russian Freedom
Was Born at Sea”. It reechoes such of the Velimir’s
lines as “Freedom is the Daughter of the Sea”
(“Should One Start His Story from His Child-
hood?.."). Perhaps, Aleksandr performed his work
in 1908, having entered the Odessa University…
The events related to the rebellious battleship
were still green in mind of the inhabitants of
Odessa.
